In his letter to pastors, Cardinal DiNardo said: "The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is very blessed to have a large Filipino and Vietnamese population and a number of priests serving in ministry here are from the region affected by this storm. We join our brothers and sisters in mourning the loss of life and the destruction in their homelands and offer our prayers and support. In order to ease some of the suffering, I join with the other bishops of the U.S. Conference in encouraging you to take up a second collection for our affected brethren and the Church of the region as soon as possible."
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is also accepting donations. They have been on the ground since before the hurricane hit. Working in coordination with the Philippine government, CARITAS Philippines, other humanitarian organizations, and the Church, CRS is initially focusing on providing shelter, safe drinking water and other essential household and hygiene items to 32,000 families on the islands of Leyte and Samar.
