Born a Philadelphia heiress, Katharine Drexel became the foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, and used her wealth to establish numerous schools and missions for Native American and African American people. Katharine is a saint for our time who actually worked in our diocese founding a school in the Vidor/Port Arthur area for African American girls. After suffering a heart attack, she spent the last 20 years of her life in quiet prayer. She is indeed a model for us as we strive to be “a people for others”.
The patient and humble endurance of the cross - whatever nature it may be - is the highest work we have to do.(St. Katharine Drexel)
